Food at certain Dallas-area hospitals is a cut above

If she has a particularly good restaurant meal, she'll slip the chef her card and invite him to call if he's looking for a new job.

"Rush Presbyterian in Chicago," she said with dreamy covetousness, "has a pastry chef."

Then, there's the you-get-to-have-a-life factor. Mr. Vorstenbosch, who has a wife and baby son, doesn't have to work the traditional nights-and-weekends restaurant schedule.

So how was the food? Spectacular. We had pork tenderloin dusted with chipotle chili, salmon with cucumber slaw, beef tenderloin with Chianti sauce, braised short ribs with smoked gouda grits, and best of all – I wish I had some now – wild mushroom enchiladas. It was all better than anything I had eaten in the previous month.

Well, nobody wants to go to the hospital.

Imagine a state-of-the-art environmental, cultural and entertainment center on the shores of Lake Red Rock, a place to spend a day or a week, with a focus on the Des Moines River watershed. That is the hope of a consortium of educators, conservationists and state and federal agencies, and the groups have been staging a series of informational meetings to unveil their plans. One such presentation was held at the Newton DMACC campus on Wednesday morning. The Cordova Center, an estimated $50 million project along the northern shores of Lake Red Rock, would create an interactive, multi-use learning center near the park's existing observation tower, as well as an outdoor amphitheater, additional cabins, a larger picnic area and an extension to the lake's Volksweg Trail. The partners, including the Marion County Conservation Board, U.S.

General Innovation

Programming note: We've launched a new blog called Enterprise Alley that's designed to give a forum to startups that are targeting the businesses with new and novel technology and approaches.

The blog, manned by Dennis Howlett, is designed to give some play to startups that are targeting the enterprise. These smaller companies are worth watching for a few reasons:

They are on the cutting edge of business technology; They may yield some new uses that can improve your ROI; They may wind up in your existing applications as the bigger fish gobble up some of these smaller players.

Here's what Dennis had to say in his introduction:

While the technology landscape seems dominated by the mega vendors churning out ERP with the occasional splash of saas/on-demand, in the background there is a plenty of innovation and experimentation.

Illegal visitors cost Australia $20m in airfares

TAXPAYERS spent more than $20 million on airfares for 5000 people who broke Australia's immigration rules and were kicked out last year.

Tourists who overstayed their visas, people who breached working conditions and students who failed their courses were among those deported.

Almost 1600 tourists who had overstayed were put in detention centres before being deported.

Department of Immigration and Citizenship figures, compiled for The Sunday Mail, show 5056 people had their airfares funded, and where required had escorts, at an average cost of $4081 each.

Airfares were only a portion of the detention-and-removal costs billed to deportees, and just a fraction of the cost is recovered by the Department each year.

"In 2006-07, DIAC recovered $902,159 from people who had previously been removed from Australia," a Department spokesman said.

Man trapped in grain bin dies

Emergency personnel tried to rescue a Tonica man trapped in a Utica soybean bin Friday morning but were unable to save his life.
Harold Paul Beenenga, 56, was working at Utica Elevator and helping load a semi when the accident occurred around 9 a.m. It remained unclear how Beenenga became trapped.
However, Utica police chief Joe Bernardoni said Beenenga and co-worker Jerry Carey had portable radios and had been communicating back and forth, but lost contact while Beenenga was in the bin, approximately 10 feet off the ground by Bernardoni's estimate. Workers called into the bin trying to get a response from Beenenga, but there was no reply or sign of life.

Winds shifting in the debate over education

Listening to Jones testify on HB 881, I am suddenly aware that, indeed, the center of gravity on the education debate has shifted. No longer are we stuck on inputs and debate about how one government can best grow another, which the input set chooses to define as "local control."

"It is a unique opportunity," Jones says of her bill establishing a state commission to grant charters, along with a fairer funding model. "This enhances local control by letting the consumer decide. To narrowly define local control [as] government monoply control does a disservice to Georgia." And to children who either drop out or struggle through bad schools that show no promise of improving.

Mass grave containing 100 bodies found in Iraq

U.S. military said on Saturday.

The Iraqi security forces discovered the site of the mass grave on Friday, and initial reports said it may contain the remains of100 badly decomposed bodies, the military said in a statement sent to Xinhua by email.

"The skeletal remains appear to have been in the grave for along time," the statement said.

The U.S. military said that they have not yet determined who might be responsible for the killing and burial, and that the grave site is currently being investigated.

Diyala province, which stretches from eastern edges of Baghdad to the Iranian border, has long been the stronghold of al-Qaida militant groups and hotbed of insurgency and sectarian violence since the U.S.-led invasion broke out in 2003.
