3G iPhones arriving this summer, say analysts

When it comes to the mythical 3G iPhone, rumors about the device are certainly nothing new. Analysts in the past predicted 3G iPhones during the 2007 holiday season, but we've all see how that one has (or hasn't) turned out.

Now the rumors are back, this time coming from UBS analysts Nicolas Gaudois and Ben Reitzes. According to AppleInsider, they're predicting that 3G iPhones with Infineon equipment inside will be arriving sometime this summer.

Although it doesn't seem to be much different from last year's rumor, this latest 3G tidbit seems to have some facts behind it. The pair believes the iPhone will use HSDPA 3G technology (the same technology AT&T uses for its current 3G offering). Infineon already produces 3G radio hardware, but references by Infineon to an "HSDPA solutions design win" may be related to the company providing a new 3G platform for the iPhone.

Pressure building on CM

Even when the dissidence within the CLP was at its peak in December last year, no one ever talked about breaking away from the party or forming a separate group to grab power. All had left the final decision with the party President, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, he added holding that such news reports, if true, could give the Opposition not only a handle but also jeopardise continuation of the elected government in office.

There has been a sharp reaction to the reports about the meeting held in a Sector 9 bungalow yesterday. Interestingly, neither of the participants of the meeting had issued any denial or clarification about the meeting.

Those owing allegiance to the Chief Minister maintain that such desperate attempts to embarrass the government would not benefit any one. Rather, it could invite strong disciplinary action against those breaching the party discipline.

Mozilla may be eyeing online services space à la .Mac, Windows Live

Mozilla Labs vice president Chris Beard has expressed interest in the possibility of creating an open and extensible infrastructure for developing online services similar to Windows Live and .Mac. Beard is intrigued by the possible advantages of closing the gap between the browser and the Internet cloud.

"It seems that as the Web continues to evolve and as more of our lives moves online, we could do more to broker even richer online experiences," writes Beard. "We've been thinking about this a lot lately. And, in particular, how the blending of the desktop and the Web—through deeper integration of the browser with online services—could further enhance the user experience, increase user control over personal information, and provide new opportunities for developers to build innovative online experiences."

Beard notes that existing web services aren't broadly designed with browser integration in mind.

Pact with ICE allows U.S. phone firm to skin callers

When a tourist uses a credit card to make an international call at one of those funny looking telephones at about 400 hotels here, everybody wins. Except the tourist.

The hotel gets $7.

The Costa Rican phone company gets paid, too.

And the owner of the phone, BBG Communications of San Diego, California, gets a payday that may run into the hundreds of dollars.

Another big winner is the Galicot family, said to be one of the richest in Tijuana, México. Family members appear to own and manage the company as well as a more conventional phone service in México, G-Tel. Most company officials would not respond to questions.

BBG Communications has managed to accrue at least 800 complaints since 1996 at the San Diego Better Business Bureau.

O'Reilly Last Night

As always, I'm on the free-speech side of this issue. Each site's proprietor has a responsibility to not allow his comment sections to become racist, sexist, violent cesspools, and some sites are better at fostering a decent comment culture than others. But just because some sites become nasty is not a reason to demand regulation of the Internet, as Bill sometimes suggests, or to suggest that because some people in a comment section are juvenile jerks, that a site is Nazi-like in any way. The best way to deal with coarse commentary on the Internet is to point it out, shine a little sunlight, and push site proprietors to foster cultures of decency on their own sites. Comments sections can be nasty places, and there are very few sites that can claim theirs are totally and completely clean (including this one), no matter what moderation policies are in place.

New Podcasting Model Disrupts the Conference Calling Industry and ...

While hundreds of conference calls take place every day, hardly any are convenient to the participant's schedule, attention span or can easily be reviewed if missed. Pioneer internet marketers are taking advantage of the growing trend of user convenience via podcasted audios.

Solana Beach, CA (PRWEB) September 18, 2006 – A new generation of internet savvy, content hungry, impatient, instant-gratification seeking consumers are looking to a new podcasting model as the ultimate in time shifted media consumption.

"When I first heard of Podference, it made a lot of sense to start hosting my expert calls and seminar pre-view interviews with them", says Jeff Mills of http://www.MidwestSuperConference.com.

WorkForce Software's EmpCenter Online Solution Selected by Matanuska ...

LIVONIA, Mich., Dec. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- WorkForce Software, Inc., a leader in workforce management solutions, announced today that Matanuska Telephone Association (MTA) selected its EmpCenter(TM) Online suite. MTA licensed EmpCenter Time and Attendance, Activity Based Costing, Employee Self-Service, and Accruals and Absence Manager to replace its antiquated workforce system.

"We chose WorkForce Software and its EmpCenter Online solution because it could support our complex pay rules, meet our short timeframe for implementation, and it is a hosted solution," said Gordon Boeve, finance accounting analyst at MTA. "There wasn't another vendor we looked at that could meet these requirements, and we are already on target to meet our end-of-year timeframe by working with WorkForce."

Automating and supporting complex pay rules, such as compliance with union labor agreements, organization-specific hourly and salary employee guidelines, overtime policies, and state and federal regulations was critical for MTA.

Cornell on the rise after clinching second Ivy title

That was never more evident than in a 72-71 victory at Harvard in mid-February. Crimson guard Jeremy Lin, a 25 percent 3-point shooter, made a 3 with 42 seconds remaining to give Harvard a 71-66 lead. Undaunted, Cornell sophomore Alex Tyler, who had committed a turnover with just over a minute remaining, made a putback, a hook that drew a goaltending call, and a layup in a 25-second span without a timeout.

''Not only do we win it in regulation, we win it with three field goals,'' Donahue said. ''The guys don't panic and throw a garbage 3 up there and get lucky. It was three executed plays. They did a terrific job of staying poised.''

That has seldom been the case. Since coach Mike Dement's 1987-88 Cornell team went 17-10 and 11-3 in the Ivy League to earn the school's second NCAA tournament bid (the 1953-54 team won the Eastern Intercollegiate Basketball League and the school's first NCAA berth two years before the Ivy League formed), the Big Red had just two winning seasons until going 16-12 and 9-5 in the Ivies in 2006-07 under Donahue.

Snow snarls North Texas roads more on its way

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for North Texas Thursday, particularly for areas along and north of Interstate 20. The winter storm warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Friday.

"Theres another shot of cold air coming with a powerful upper-level trough right over North Texas," said Jennifer Dunn, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.

The conditions should persist through Friday morning, Dunn said.

With Fridays daytime high temperature topping out around 40 degrees, those areas that received the heaviest snowfall should see the snow stick around through the day. It could reach the mid-40s in portions of the Metroplex. Cloud cover should clear out Friday afternoon and evening, leading to a freezing Friday night in the mid-20s.
