Pirate Bay case unlikely to be heard before summer

The trial of four people involved in operating The Pirate Bay will likely not take place before the summer. US fashion designer makes 'plagiarized' scarf payout (4 Mar 08) Luxury hotel in pattern theft row (28 Feb 08) Pirate Bay team in fresh internet controversy (21 Feb 08) Anita Thimberg from the Stockholm district court cited the complexity of the case involving the file sharing site as one of the main reasons for the delay. It can take weeks for the parties to simply go through all the documents included in the summons, she told The Local. Thimberg also pointed to the fact that many are party to the case, including record companies that may be seeking monetary damages. Its a rather large and unusual case, she said. No specific date has yet been set for the trial, which is expected to last four to six days.

Spain Polarized Before Sunday Vote

Today, the vanquished Popular Party and its leader, Mariano Rajoy, still believe that they were robbed of the election and that the victor, Socialist Workers' Party leader José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, is an accidental prime minister who lacks legitimacy. Accidental or not, Zapatero embarked on a four-year program to liberalize divorce, marriage and other social laws, an agenda that deeply divided the country and prompted bitter clashes with the Catholic Church, one of Spain's most powerful institutions.

On Sunday, Spanish voters return to the polls after an acrimonious parliamentary election campaign dominated by those same social issues, disputes over immigration and the flagging Spanish economy, and complaints about the Catholic Church meddling in politics. Zapatero and Rajoy, who launched bitter personal attacks and accused each other of lying during the campaign, are both seeking a verdict from voters on whether the 2004 election was a mistake.

Interxion 'lining itself up for £300m flotation'

One of Europe's largest data hosting companies, Interxion, is understood to be lining itself up for a flotation in the new year which its owners hope will value the company at over £300m.

The move follows the successful flotation of rival Telecity earlier this year and comes amid a growing realisation that the online market is expanding rapidly with electronic data retention and retrieval becoming ever more important.

Interxion, majority-owned by New York-based private equity firm Baker Capital, is understood to have been approaching potential investors, using investment banks Morgan Stanley and Bear Stearns for the deal.

Founded in 1998 in the Netherlands, Interxion has 22 sites across 13 cities in 11 countries and delivers a full range of data center, co-location and managed services solutions to over 1,000 corporate customers.

Is Tory plan to vet films censorship?

If tax credits are up for review at a time after the film has been produced (which is when you apply for them--it's impossible to beforehand) the banks will hire risk-assessment consultants to review the film for potential 'policy' deviations before they lend the money to the production to finance those same tax credits. Otherwise the banks will sometimes lose their money.

No matter how fair and impartial the committee is or will be does not change the fact that the mechanism of the money for film and television production only works through bank lending, which this Bill will make equally more difficult to attain for all, under all circumstances.

Please remove the provisions of a review process for tax credits, it is not only unwise but also stupid.

Sincerely,

Carl Laudan Director of "Sheltered Life"

The Bride Show Abu Dhabi reports record visitor numbers

The show, which took place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre at the beginning of February, attracted fiancés and fashionistas alike who came to see the largest number of fashion shows in one event in the UAE capital. Each day four designers launched their latest collections, which included bridal wear, Abayas and haute couture creations, modelled on the catwalk to rapturous applause and flashing cameras. The last day featured designs by the finalists of the inaugural Swarovski Abaya Design Awards, a competition to launch undiscovered design talent. Eiman Al Marzouqi, a UAE national from Abu Dhabi, was named the winner of the Award for her unique use of Swarovski crystals to embellish the traditional national dress. The Bride Show Abu Dhabi, organised by IIR Middle East, hosted more than 200 exhibitors, including European bridal gown manufacturers and popular regional designers, such as Ghanati Haute Couture and Rahmanian Haute Couture.

Hockey wives and abortion

They have cute websites designed to appeal to teenage girls, lots of advice about boys — giggle — and sites on MySpace. They take great care to look like kindly counselling centres. In fact, they exist solely to prevent abortion.

Planned Parenthood told me it frequently talks to women who went to these apparently welcoming places for counselling on the three options — abortion, adoption and parenting. The group says women report feeling badly treated.

Charity's rewards

The problem is worse than just some hockey fans inadvertently donating to a cause they may oppose — that is a personal issue between a fan and her team (in my case, the Canadiens). What irks is that our tax dollars are involved.

The raffle money is channelled through the Sens Foundation, the team's registered charity arm, which is matching every dollar raised by The Better Halves.

Second, even if it does, the copyright owner has to prove that an actual distribution occurred -- it's not enough to say it could have happened.

This doesn't leave the recording industry without a weapon -- everyone agrees that file sharing involves the making of unauthorized copies of songs. It's just that the recording industry doesn't want to have to go to the trouble of gathering and introducing evidence of copying in court (like everyone else does). It's much easier to rely exclusively on MediaSentry's downloads from each defendant -- that way there is no need to know anything about the defendant.

The trouble with this is the precedent it sets for the future. Already, the recording industry has sued XM as a "distributor" because they transmit satellite radio to subscribers who have recording devices.
