| Changing the Culture of Philanthropy: a Young Donor's Views
As a growing number of charities and donors raise questions about how traditional philanthropy works, join a discussion with a donor who is trying to transform the process. Holden Karnofsky, 26, left the hedge-fund industry to start GiveWell, an organization devoted to evaluating charities, as well as the Clear Fund -- a philanthropy he calls "the world's first transparent grant maker" -- to demonstrate how he and his colleagues think foundations should operate. The Clear Fund, now in the process of awarding about $140,000 in grants, asks its grant applicants to provide hard evidence that they are effective. It publishes its assessment of that evidence on the GiveWell Web site, whether it decides the group is worthy of support or not. He will be available online to answer questions from Chronicle readers about the culture of foundations, the new generation of philanthropists, the value of charity-rating services, and his own efforts to create a new type of grant maker.
McCain looks confident; Democratic race tightens
I think that this will continue to drag on. There are some in the Democratic Race that would rather sacrifice the life and momentum of the party for their own selfish dream. The test of character and motives will take place tomorrow night once all of the votes are in regarding who is a real Democrat. John Mcain will gain all of the delgates needed and Oh how happy they will be that the Democrats are still inhouse fighting. I will be glad when this is all over. I am simply sick of it! .
Souped-Up Contact Lenses Promise On-Demand Bionic Eyesight
Potential uses include virtual displays for pilots, video-game projections and telescopic vision for soldiers. A working prototype of a lens-embedded antenna that draws power for the device from radio frequencies has also been created. The next steps are to build a version that can display several pixels—and then to test it on a person. The UW team uses a technique called self-assembly to manufacture the eyewear. Researchers dust a specially designed contact lens with microscale components that automatically bond to predetermined receptor sites. The shape of each component dictates where it attaches. “There's a lot of room to expand," Babak Parviz, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at UW, says of the technology. “You can let your imagination run wild." .
EGYPT: Torture Ruling Boosts Rights
The infamous video clip dates back to 2006 when police officer Islam Nabih arrested the victim; a young man in the poor Cairo neighbourhood of Bulaq, who was known for challenging police officers and standing up against their harsh methods. To break his will and make an example of him before others, the officer and his assistant Reda Fathy from Bulaq Dakrur police station in Giza governorate decided to sexually abuse the man on tape and show it around. The graphic tape shows the two men handcuffing the victim behind his back and using a broom stick on his anus. They ordered the victim to call himself names and to say that he was actually a woman. Kabir's loud screams for mercy inspired several documentaries and TV shows on pan-Arab TV stations on torture and abuse in Egyptian and Arab prisons.

Fahim, who is popular in the party and would be harder for Zardari to forceout. It also reports that the PPP is still working out the details of its coalition with Sharif's party, which is said to be reluctant to participate fully. The battle over Musharraf and his rule is still driving Pakistani politics, reports The New York Times. Lawyers who spearheaded opposition to him last year are regrouping and calling for the reversal of Musharraf's purge of the judiciary, including the reinstatement of a former chief judge who remains under house arrest. Nor have the calls for impeaching Musharraf once parliament reconvenes gone away, adding to his difficulties. Mr. Musharraf, much weakened since removing his uniform and since his political party sustained a resounding defeat at the polls, nevertheless retains one powerful weapon.
