THE BUSH LEAGUE: TV celeb watcher Billy Bush's empire is growing. President Bush's star-struck cousin has been tapped by Westwood One to host a nightly syndicated talk and music radio show -- in addition to his regular co-hosting gig on ''Access Hollywood.'' ''The Billy Bush Show'' is expected to debut in major markets in April, as will an affiliated outlet: BillyBush.com. Bush got his start in radio -- first at a New Hampshire station, followed by two in Washington, D.C., before getting his TV break as an East Coast correspondent for ''Access'' in 2001. MOVING HERE? Maybe I shouldn't have been so flip in Wednesday's column about Ashlee Simpson telling the crowd at the Underground she'd love to move to Chicago. Word has it, the singer and her rock-star boyfriend Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy have been spotted checking out a few fancy condos on the North Side.
Cities, states get 'A' for preparation
In the first report of its kind, U.S. health officials said the nation's states and cities made a strong effort to prepare for a flu pandemic, bioterrorism or other emergency health crisis, but big challenges remain. "I think in terms of effort and progress, an 'A,'" said Dr. Richard Besser of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, when asked to assign a letter grade. "In terms of amount of work to be done, I would say that's absolutely enormous." It was the government's first assessment of the payoff from its investment of more than $5 billion since the terrorist attacks of 2001 to make the country better prepared for a variety of public health emergencies. The report looked at the staffing, laboratory capability and other resources of state, local and territorial health departments for handling bioterrorism or other disasters.

The ‘First Woman,’ Once Again
It is noteworthy that in January 2007, when Mrs. Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama declared their intention to seek the Oval Office, the top six circulating newspapers in the U.S. ran 59 articles with Mr. Obama in the headline and just 36 with Mrs. Clinton. Now that we have had a female presidential candidate who entered the race as a front-runner, I have to wonder if the next one will also be regarded as a "first." Even if, after 130 years of women running for president, we are finally ready to shed this label, my guess is that the novelty frame will persist. If one of the next presidential candidates should happen to be a woman and she is not framed as "the first" woman to run, she will surely be touted as the "only" woman in the race. However, either would be a shame, because women in politics should by now be regarded as normal, not strange.
The Truth About Autism: Scientists Reconsider What They Think They ...
The YouTube clip opens with a woman facing away from the camera, rocking back and forth, flapping her hands awkwardly, and emitting an eerie hum. She then performs strange repetitive behaviors: slapping a piece of paper against a window, running a hand lengthwise over a computer keyboard, twisting the knob of a drawer. She bats a necklace with her hand and nuzzles her face against the pages of a book. And you find yourself thinking: Who's shooting this footage of the handicapped lady, and why do I always get sucked into watching the latest viral video? But then the words "A Translation" appear on a black screen, and for the next five minutes, 27-year-old Amanda Baggs — who is autistic and doesn't speak — describes in vivid and articulate terms what's going on inside her head as she carries out these seemingly bizarre actions.
Voters to decide on third riverboat casino for Baton Rouge
After a multimillion-dollar public relations campaign and questions about whether something new will destroy something old, East Baton Rouge Parish voters decide Saturday whether to allow a third riverboat casino. In a $250 million plan, Pinnacle Entertainment Inc. wants to bring a boat to Baton Rouge, which, since gambling was legalized in the 1990s, has been a two-casino market. .
the has-been
Today, Kidd Island Bay is filling up with sediment from all the subdivisions. But happily, no one has figured out how to put a house on Kidd Island. In the old days, the few brave souls who lived on the bay could skate across the lake to the town movie theater. The theater is gone now, and the lake doesn't freeze like it used to, so everyone has a satellite dish. As a Camp Fire Girl, my wife used to earn beads by making the half-mile swim to Kidd Island and back from Camp Neewahlu. The camp closed a few years ago. The Camp Fire Girls sold it for $2 million to former NYPD Blue star Dennis Franz, confirming everybody's suspicion that no matter what Giuliani says, anybody who cared that much about crime would leave New York City and move to Idaho. Giuliani raised $50-100,000 in Coeur d'Alene.

BSkyB appeals Competition ruling
The TV recording site TVCatchup.com has had its service suspended after complaints from the BBC, Channel 4, ITV and Channel Five. TVCatchup launched in trial last year, allowing users to record offline TV shows, watch them online and share copies with other members. The UK-focused site immediately attracted the concern of broadcasters, which have invested millions of pounds in their own web TV catch-up services. A note posted on the site over the weekend said the web hosting company terminated the TV service on February 15, and that management assumed this was as a result of requests from broadcasters. Back to top Q4 in Latin America for DirecTV DirecTV Latin America achieved net subscriber additions of 199,000 in the quarter, a jump the company attributed to strong customer growth in Brazil, Venezuela and Argentina.
'First' iPhone Trojan rolls into town
Hackers have created Trojan horse malware targeted at Apple's much-hyped iPhone device. The package - more of a prank than a threat - poses as an "important system" upgrade supposedly needed prior to upgrading to version 1.1.3 of Apple's firmware. The "iPhone firmware 1.1.3 prep" seems to lack malicious purpose. Problems kick in when users try to uninstall the package. .
