Google turns to X Factor's Fuller for push into TV

Internet giant Google is in secret talks with Simon Fuller, the British entrepreneur behind the Spice Girls, about a joint venture that could change the way TV is watched over the internet.

News of the collaboration will prompt speculation that Google's plans for the TV market include generating original content and competing with major broadcasters.

Executives from the £229bn internet giant have been in discussions with Fuller, who invented Pop Idol, the world's most successful TV franchise, for about a year. Although details of the deal are a closely guarded secret, sources close to Fuller say it could revolutionise the way entertainment and music are distributed.

'It's a big idea on a global scale,' he said. 'It will change television in much the way iTunes changed the way music is disseminated.'

Last year saw the launch of Google Video, which offers full-length TV programmes and films on a pay-per-view basis over the internet.

Although I won't be around, I'll at least try to make one of the games next year. I owe it to the Terps for four great years here. Maryland Football - 2008 Schedule Games to circle, apart from all of them? 8/30, vs FCS-runner-up Delaware. That's not as guaranteed as you think. 9/13, vs California - Maryland is 1 - 3 all time against the PAC-10, with no game being decided by more than seven points. 11/6 @ Virginia Tech - This game is never easy. At first glance, you'd think Maryland would start off with two wins, a loss, a win, two more losses, a split at home, a loss, a win, and two losses for a 5 - 7 record. But that's why they play the game, I guess. Maryland's baseball season, which I didn't post on at all last year, begins February 22 against Coastal Carolina. .

Scandal is a turn off for ITV

By Mark Jefferies

Rock Rivals is part of ITV's bid to claw back some cash in the wake of the phone-in scandals.

The station lost £58million last year as a lack of revenue from premium-rate competitions contributed to a 35 per cent slide in pre-tax profits. It reported profits of £188m - £100m down on 2006.

The company said revenues from premium-rate services (PRS), including the discontinued ITV Play channel, were down by £58m.

The figures also illustrate a huge drop in calls to phone-vote shows such as I'm A Celebrity..., which are suffering as a result of the channel's tarnished reputation.

USDA Recalls 143M Pounds Of California Beef

CBS News consumer safety correspondent Nancy Cordes first reported on Westland/Hallmark's use of sick, or "downer" cows, on a January broadcast of the CBS Evening News.Cordes reported that meat-industry officials said at the time that there was no way to know if the cows actually entered the meat supply and that ailing livestock would have had to pass a gauntlet of USDA veterinarians and inspectors before being slaughtered and sent to market. But Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer now says his department has evidence that Westland did not routinely contact its veterinarian when cattle became non-ambulatory after passing inspection, violating health regulations."Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection, Food Safety and Inspection Service has determined them to be unfit for human food and the company is conducting a recall," Schafer said in a statement.A phone message left for Westland president Steve Mendell was not immediately returned.Federal officials suspended operations at Westland/Hallmark after an undercover Humane Society video surfaced showing crippled and sick animals being shoved with forklifts. Two former employees were charged Friday.

Vaux's swifts may lose their favorite Monroe chimney

Imagine about 5,000 Vaux's swifts circling and circling just before dark. By the time darkness falls, they're ready to settle in for the night, dramatically swirling down into one Monroe chimney.

The chimney works fine for the roosting swifts, who traditionally gathered in hollow old-growth snags. Thousands will meet at traditional stopover locations during spring and fall migration to accumulate fat reserves.

Where once there were countless old-growth snags, most in the Monroe area have been cut down, and the swifts have dropped in numbers. Now the swifts' favorite local chimney, the old, tall brick one at Frank Wagner Junior Elementary School in Monroe, may be torn down for safety reasons.

The smallest swift in North America visits Monroe twice a year, at the end of April and peaking in mid- to late-May; and beginning in mid-August and peaking in mid-September.

We are looking for voluntary translators from Arabic into English.

In a calculated effort to vilify Islam and generate support for further US military aggressions against Muslim countries, Horowitz is proclaiming an "Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week" on dozens of American college campuses starting Oct. 22.

The very term "Islamo-fascism" is obviously very tendentious and scandalously inaccurate. In fact, one could argue with absolute certitude that the term is an inherent and eternal oxymoron, since Islam represents the ideological antithesis of fascism, a western concept based on authoritarianism, chauvinism, jingoism, bellicosity and militarism.

The Quran proclaims that " O Mankind, We (God) Created you from a single pair of male and female and made you into nations and tribes so that you may know (cooperate with) each other.

U.S. candidates blitz states as Super Tuesday looms

She has less than Obama with only a few years in the senate where she showed no leadership and in fact, enabled Bush in his disastrous foreign policy debacle, the worst blunder in American history. Her misamanagement of her campaign is another example of her incompetence.

New York In Autumn

But there's more to New York than just shopping to die for! During the festive season the whole city becomes a fairy tale of extravagant delights as the locals gear up for ‘The Holidays'.

The lights are fantastic – literally entire tress are lit up in white lights – festive sculptures are dotted around the streets and the annual Christmas Tree and Neapolitan Baroque Crèche at the Metropolitan Museum, one of the best museums in the world, is dusted off from 20 November–6 January 2008 and is truly unmissable!

Basically, it's a vivid 18th-century Neapolitan crèche scene — embellished with a profuse array of diminutive, lifelike attendant figures and silk-robed angels hovering above — that adorns the candlelit spruce. There's a lighting ceremony every Friday and Saturday at 7pm.
