| Google turns to X Factor's Fuller for push into TV
Internet giant Google is in secret talks with Simon Fuller, the British entrepreneur behind the Spice Girls, about a joint venture that could change the way TV is watched over the internet. News of the collaboration will prompt speculation that Google's plans for the TV market include generating original content and competing with major broadcasters. Executives from the £229bn internet giant have been in discussions with Fuller, who invented Pop Idol, the world's most successful TV franchise, for about a year. Although details of the deal are a closely guarded secret, sources close to Fuller say it could revolutionise the way entertainment and music are distributed. 'It's a big idea on a global scale,' he said. 'It will change television in much the way iTunes changed the way music is disseminated.' Last year saw the launch of Google Video, which offers full-length TV programmes and films on a pay-per-view basis over the internet.

The company said revenues from premium-rate services (PRS), including the discontinued ITV Play channel, were down by £58m. CBS News consumer safety correspondent Nancy Cordes first reported on Westland/Hallmark's use of sick, or "downer" cows, on a January broadcast of the CBS Evening News.Cordes reported that meat-industry officials said at the time that there was no way to know if the cows actually entered the meat supply and that ailing livestock would have had to pass a gauntlet of USDA veterinarians and inspectors before being slaughtered and sent to market.But Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer now says his department has evidence that Westland did not routinely contact its veterinarian when cattle became non-ambulatory after passing inspection, violating health regulations."Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection, Food Safety and Inspection Service has determined them to be unfit for human food and the company is conducting a recall," Schafer said in a statement.A phone message left for Westland president Steve Mendell was not immediately returned.Federal officials suspended operations at Westland/Hallmark after an undercover Humane Society video surfaced showing crippled and sick animals being shoved with forklifts.Two former employees were charged Friday.
Vaux's swifts may lose their favorite Monroe chimney
Imagine about 5,000 Vaux's swifts circling and circling just before dark. By the time darkness falls, they're ready to settle in for the night, dramatically swirling down into one Monroe chimney.
The chimney works fine for the roosting swifts, who traditionally gathered in hollow old-growth snags. Thousands will meet at traditional stopover locations during spring and fall migration to accumulate fat reserves.
Where once there were countless old-growth snags, most in the Monroe area have been cut down, and the swifts have dropped in numbers. Now the swifts' favorite local chimney, the old, tall brick one at Frank Wagner Junior Elementary School in Monroe, may be torn down for safety reasons.
The smallest swift in North America visits Monroe twice a year, at the end of April and peaking in mid- to late-May; and beginning in mid-August and peaking in mid-September.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 839 and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1920 in La Crosse.Ed is survived by two daughters, Susan (Kim) Krueger of Sparta, Wis., and Sarah (Richard) Luebke of Wisconsin Dells, Wis.; two sons, David Jarzemski (Kathy Brotherwood) of La Crosse and Donald Jarzemski of La Crosse; five grandchildren, Bradley (Laura) Krueger, Kurt (Cynthia) Krueger, Brian (Jill) Jarzemski, Kimberly (Donald) Bolliger and Scott (Rumi) Leubke; and eight great-grandchildren.In addition to his wife, Charlotte, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Senger and Eleanor Pittman.A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m.
