Gunman infiltrates Jewish seminary in Jerusalem, eight killed

A PALESTINIAN gunman opened fire inside a Jewish religious school in Jerusalem today, killing eight teens as violence in the region continues to escalate.

Eight students at the Merkaz Harav Yeshiva in predominantly Jewish west Jerusalem were shot dead and another nine wounded when a Palestinian from east Jerusalem entered the building and started shooting, police said. "The terrorist arrived with a packet in his hand, got out a weapon and started firing, killing eight people and wounding nine others,'' Aharon Franco, head of Jerusalem district police, told reporters on the scene. The head of the school, Rabbi Haim Katz, told AFP that all the victims were between 15 and 16 years old. The attacker was shot dead by law enforcement forces, Franco said. Israel's main ally the United States slammed the "act of terror and depravity'' and the United Nations Security Council said it would hold an emergency meeting later Thursday in the wake of the attack.Ambulances rushed to the school while helicopters circled in the skies after what marked the first major attack in Jerusalem since Feburary 2004, when a suicide bomber killed eight people and himself aboard a bus.

Domestic Spying

Cenk Uygur: Why Do You Need Immunity If You Haven't Broken the Law? (1 comments) The Bush administration is desperately trying to get immunity for the telecom companies inserted into the next wiretapping bill. But let me ask a simple question - why would the telecom companies need immunity if they didn't break the law? I'm not trying to be clever here. I'm asking a literal question. Isn't this an obvious admission that the administration did ask the large telecommunication companies to break the law ?

Hugh Jackman Digs For Dessert

But as a writer, I just haven't learned how to express myself in a couple of sentences or less even though I realize, that is the type of communication that is most prevelant across the internet. But just because that is the way most choose to "talk" with one another, that doesn't make it the ONLY way. I think we have been given an extrodinary opportunity to communicate with one another across this great, big world, so when one chooses to do so with more words than some deem necessary, some feel the need to put them in their place. But the thing is, this site (and many others) allow for long posts. It must okay to actually try to communicate ideas or else it would only be possible to communicate in a paragraph or less. That's how the internet would be set up.

As for rose colored glasses… Sorry.

Brilliant scientist or blasphemous rebel?

For many of us, the birthday of evolutionist Charles Darwin, author of "Origin of Species," comes and goes, and we never notice. But for those who appreciate the great contribution that Darwin made to science, his birthday often is celebrated with a series of events."There is an internationally coordinated celebration that is worldwide," says Dr. Robert Mucci, associate professor and program director of Indiana University Northwest's Anthropology Program.Indeed, Darwin Day has its own Web site (www.darwinday.org) dedicated to the celebrations of science and humanity that are held on or around Feb. 12, which is the day Darwin was born 199 years ago. Interestingly, another great man was born that day a continent away -- Abraham Lincoln."Specifically, it celebrates the discoveries and life of Charles Darwin -- the man who first described biological evolution via natural selection with scientific rigor," reads the site that lists more than 400 celebratory events."More generally, Darwin Day expresses gratitude for the enormous benefits that scientific knowledge, acquired through human curiosity and ingenuity, has contributed to the advancement of humanity."Darwin Day events circle the globe, and there is a series of them in Northwest Indiana starting this weekend at the First Unitarian Church in Hobart. On Saturday, Prof.

Britney Spears

My sources, possibly imaginary, tell me that Britney's new lawyer refused to budge on having her client wear underwear around the children. Kevin's lawyers were specific with their demands that "the boys not return home looking like goddamn Two-Face from Batman." Britney's lawyer conceded that acid vadge is a concern, but could not promise the wearing of undergarments. The two sides will convene later today and hopefully reach an agreement that effectively protects the children and, also, Britney's right to damage their vision.

Apart from getting ten or fifteen bucks 15 years ago when I played as part of a pep band for an opening of one of their stores at Penn State, Wal-Mart has never paid me one red cent nor have anybody else associated with this project; I don't even like Wal-Mart, but can't stand hysterical idiots who demand we abandon the rule of law because they don't like a particular tenant.

STOP McCAIN IN FLORIDA

To the extent that I understand how most Republicans think, it would seem that former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani comes closer to the Republican ideal than any of the other viable Republican candidates. They are all good and decent men who would be better for America than either of the Democratic front-runners. But it is difficult to see, from a conservative- and Republican-values perspective, what major shortcoming Giuliani brings as compared to the other candidates. And given the obsession of liberal news media with publishing negative reports about Giuliani and frequent praise of John McCain, it would appear that it is Giuliani whom Democrats most fear as the Republican presidential nominee.

On the "war on terror," no Republican contender but John McCain equals Giuliani in longtime efforts on behalf of that war or in understanding and articulating the threat radical Islam poses to America and to liberty on earth.
